15 minute challenge...where I pretend to sew

Another week to check in with Kate and the 15 minute challenge...another week I post a day late...oh well, it's one of my quirks! Anywho...not a lot of sewing was accomplished this past week...as in...

Tuesday: none
Wednesday: none
Thursday: zip pouch
Friday: none
Saturday: none
Sunday: none
Monday: none

only 1 of 7!  However, I do have an excuse...I was busy running, and out of town for most of the week.  I can say I already have started this week out right...but probably only because I'm on a deadline.  (more on that later...never know who might be watching my blog!).

I've been a bit scattered lately...not sure what or where to head next with my sewing.  I want to get a quilt finished that will actually fit on my bed!  And I have one waiting to be quilted that would work (my Terrain Swoon) and another in pieces (Our Quilt) that would fit also.  But I also want to start something new...just not sure what.  And, in a spell of good news...I have a wedding quilt to get to work on...I'm very excited about that, but nervous also.  The bride has given me an idea of colors...and I can almost picture what I want in my mind...but it's fleeting...maybe I need a mood board for each quilt I want to make...to help me focus my ideas.  I'll have to look into that.

Oh well...off to work I go...

15 minute challenge...call me bag lady

Wow...this week is going slightly faster than I thought!  I'm a day late posting for the 15 minute challenge...oh well, better late than never!

Tuesday: none
Wednesday: none
Thursday: none
Friday: 241 tote
Saturday: fleece blanket, 241 tote
Sunday: Cargo duffle
Monday: none

So only 3 days of 7 the past week, but man oh man...those 3 days were pretty awesome!  I spent the majority of time working on bags!  One for Girl, one for Guy.  Both bags are patterns by Anna Griffin of Noodlehead and both bags I would seriously make again in a heartbeat!  Her patterns are pretty awesome.  I also whipped together a fleece blanket for Girl as she has been asking for one...it took me 20 minutes...and now I really need to clean my machine!

I have no true rhyme or reason to my sewing right now...I think more than anything it's just the sheer desire to create...I think it's time to pull another quilt out of the UFO pile and get it finished...and then maybe start a new one.  I am also thinking about making bags for all of my nieces this year for Christmas.  I think the 241 tote is perfect for them...and I may get started on that soon.  This week will not be a big sewing week as I have some outside plans that will be taking up the majority of my time (more on those later).

Hope your week is sew-rific!

15 minute challenge...

Let's get down to it...my weekly results for the 15 minute challenge...

Tuesday: none
Wednesday: none
Thursday: baby stuff
Friday: none
Saturday: baby stuff
Sunday: Supertote
Monday: none

Only 3 of 7 days.  Not exactly what I was hoping for, but some of it was pure laziness on my part!  And after the marathon of Super-tote-ness on Sunday...I was a little in need of a break yesterday.  (speaking of which...my Supertote post will come along here later today!  have it all written, just gotta add pics!).

I'm definitely feeling the urge to be sewing right now instead of at work...so that's a good sign.  I've started thinking about Christmas presents I'd like to make...and a family member recently got engaged, so perhaps a quilt as a wedding gift...and I still have some more baby stuff I want to get done...so lots of plans...so little time...best get busy!!

15 minute challenge...

Happy Tuesday!  I'm feeling so great right now having gotten back in my sewing space over the past week!  I wasn't 7 for 7...but let's see how it all worked out in the 15 minute challenge this week:

Tuesday: none
Wednesday: none
Thursday: the slab, Starburst
Friday: Starburst
Saturday: Starburst, applique
Sunday: appliqued baby stuff
Monday: none

So...4 of 7...not bad at all!  Plus I started working on a new skill...and learned a tiny bit about applique.  So far I'm enjoying it, but I want to learn more!

Taking a bit of time off (even though it wasn't by choice) was both a blessing and a curse.  It was great because I felt invigorated...I was ready to conquer the world and get all kinds of stuff done...at the same time it was terrible because just starting on anything was a bit overwhelming.  All I could see was piles of UFOs staring at me (not really, many were packaged up and out of the way).  So I faced them...pulled out several and decided on one to finish up.  So my Starburst quilt top got finished.  Of course who knows when it will get quilted and bound and officially finished...but it's not sitting in pieces any more...so moral victory!!!

15 minute challenge...

ooops!  I'm a day late in checking in with the 15 minute challenge.  But what can you expect from someone who woke up yesterday morning convinced it was Friday?  (it was not fun to realize it was definitely Tuesday!).  We are knee deep in what should, hopefully, be the last major event at work for the year, and I'm just ready for it to be over!  Anyways, here are my stats:

Tuesday: X plus
Wednesday: X plus
Thursday: none
Friday: X plus
Saturday: X plus and Lawn Chair
Sunday: Lawn Chair
Monday: none

Another 5 of 7 week!  I'm very excited about my trend lately towards actually finishing up projects.  Lawn Chair was pieced way back in April, basted in August, and finally quilted in September (perhaps it will be bound by December?).  It will be my 3rd finish of the month!  I have FMQd this one and the last one I finished and I'm really enjoying how that is going.  The time I spent learning more about what FMQ was, and how to do it has really paid off (you can check out this post to see more about my path with FMQ).  However, I don't think that this is a skill that can just be left to sit and will need practice or the skills will be lost.  I also haven't made it all the way through one of the classes, so there is still tons to learn.  I will say that one of my goals for this year was to improve upon my FMQ skills, and I can consider that goal met!

15 minute challenge...back in the game!

After taking the summer off and stepping away from the regularly scheduled sewing, I am so happy to say that this past week put me back in the thick of it!  How I have missed making time regularly for myself at the sewing table!  So here we go with this week's 15 minute challenge with Kate!

Tuesday: Zig Zag
Wednesday: Zig Zag
Thursday: none
Friday: RWB
Saturday: RWB, xplus
Sunday: RWB, xplus
Monday: none

5 of 7!  Feeling good!  This month's fostering creativity theme is "learn something new every day."  Wow.  That's a tough one.  I'm by profession, a teacher.  This is what I tell my students regularly (of course they are all over the age of 18, and mostly male, so they rarely listen...and one of my current students happens to be my husband...so we are really working on the listening!).  There are times around my department (training) where it is often a running joke that we learned something new that day.  Truth is...we really do.  We learn from out students, from each other, from our children...etc.  Now, how does this apply to fostering creativity...well, not sure that it is so easy to apply to ones creative piece.  Some days I'm sewing the same block over and over...doesn't feel like I'm increasing my knowledge...but at the same time...those seams are getting straighter and more accurate the more I go.  So instead of "learn" something new every day...it may be in the "practice" something every day.  Stuff for me to think about.

Hope you have had a great stitching week!

15 minute challenge...week 44

Checking in with Kate and the 15 minute challenge for the week!

Tuesday: Camo quilt

Wednesday: Camo quilt

Thursday: Camo quilt

Friday: laundry bags

Saturday: none

Sunday: none

Monday: none

So there you go, a 4 of 7 week and a deadline met and a quilt finished...and new fun stuff to play with!

On to this month's theme of fostering creativity...exploring other creative interests.  And I must say...other than sewing non-quilt items (bags usually), I don't really spend a lot of time pursuing other creative interests.  Two years ago, it was a completely different story.  I used to stamp, make cards, scrapbook, and pursue other paper craft interests.  And then I started sewing.  I did both paper crafts and sewing for awhile...but in the end, I really lost interest in the paper crafts.  Sewing became my major creative outlet.  I have kept some of my old paper crafting supplies and some stamps...but got rid of a TON of stuff.  And I have been so happy since I cleared all of that out.  It was sitting there for a long time and as much as I looked at it...I just couldn't do it.

So I consider sewing my major outlet...and figure that since I look to do more than quilts (love making bags!), then I have more than one creative sewing outlet.

15 minute challenge...week 42!

Here we go with this week's check in with Kate and the 15 minute challenge!

Tuesday: none

3 of  7...not bad...got some stuff done...wish I'd gotten more time in on the other days.  I am still working on being an observer.  There are times I tend to just plow ahead and not really worry about the opinion or expectation of others.  This can be both good and bad.  Good chance that if I'm not concerned at all with what someones opinion is...then I won't be offended if they don't like what I have made.  Now, this could be a problem if I actually want them to like it, or made something at their request, and didn't take their expectations or opinion into consideration.  I have a WIP on my table that has been in progress for months.  This is not my quilt.  This is a memory quilt for someone in the family and I want them to love it.  I think part of the reason that I haven't finished it, is that I am nervous about the recipients liking the quilt.  I know it's pretty likely that they will, no matter what, but it's still a bit scary.  So I'm thinking I just need to suck it up, get it done, and get it to where it belongs.  Guess I better get busy!

15 minute challenge...week 41

Coming to you a little late this week, but here we go with the 15 minute challenge!

First the good news...I'm no longer on night shift!  We were able to finish up what we needed in one week, so I'm back to good ole daylight hours!

Bad news...well...none, just not a ton of sewing done!

Tuesday: none

Wednesday: none

Thursday: none

Friday: Lawn Chair and paper piecing

Saturday: paper piecing

Sunday: none

Monday: none (more on what I did on Monday later!)

So that's all she wrote!  2 of 7.  That's ok. Just a quick post, hope to be back more with later!

15 minute challenge...week 40

It's Tuesday, and that means it's time to check in with Kate and the 15 minute challenge.  I'm back on night shift for a week or two, so it's really hard for me to tell if I'm coming or going right now, so I best just get to it:

Tuesday:  Soda Shoppe

Wednesday: Soda Shoppe

Thursday: RWB

Friday: none

Saturday: Soda Shoppe

Sunday: Soda Shoppe

Monday: none

5 for 7, not too shabby.  I finished quilting Soda Shoppe on Sunday and now just need to make the binding and get it bound!  RWB is another quilt that has been hanging out in some form or another for awhile, so I'm hoping to get it finished and quilted soon.

It was difficult to leave the house yesterday for work, I really just wanted to stay at home with my family and just be with them.  My thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Boston and all victims and their families.

15 minute challenge...week 39

Happy Tuesday!  Spring has really sprung around these parts, and that has led to all kinds of "spring fever" in my house.  (As noted in the reconfiguring that was happening last week through the weekend).  It has also kicked my urge to be creative up several more notches...so let's check in with Kate and the 15 minute challenge to see how it all worked out!

Tuesday: OQ

Wednesday: none

Thursday: Marcelle Medallion

Friday: Marcelle Medallion

Saturday: Marcelle Medallion

Sunday: Marcelle Medallion, Soda Shoppe

Monday: Soda Shoppe

So we have another 6 of 7 week!  There were several days that I sat down for exactly 15 minutes...and then was off and running for something else.  Thankfully the pieced border that I was working on for my Marcelle Medallion quilt was lots of little pieces, so 15 minute chunks of time worked out perfectly.

To keep with the April theme of fostering creativity, Kate has asked questions today regarding knowing one's audience.  And to be perfectly honest, one of the things I worry about most when I am making a quilt specifically for someone, is that I hope they like it.  I may love it...but it's hard to know in advance if others will like that which they receive.  For the Soda Shoppe quilt, I let my daughter pic the main fabric (see yesterday's post for more info), but I picked the pattern.  It turns out she loves the pattern too, so it's all good.  For the stack of quilts I made for Christmas gifts, well it was a pull and shoot kinda thing.  Shake n Bake fabrics were selected because they were more masculine (all I knew was the recipient didn't want flowers), for the rainbow quilts, I figured if my daughter liked them, her cousins would too...and I was thankfully correct with that.  For Strawberry Swoon, the recipient has liked anything and everything I have ever made for her...so I knew no matter what, she would like the quilt.  For other quilts, like Layers of Good Fortune...I made the quilt with no intended recipient in mind...and ended up giving it to someone because they like the color purple.  I think with handmade gifts, more than anything, you have to know if the person would appreciate something handmade (some don't, and that's ok).  If they like something handmade, then there is almost no way to strike out on the quilt you make for them (as long as it's not something made in their least favorite colors!).  For my sister, whom I've made two quilts, I've tried to make her something that will match her furniture or living room colors, beyond that, it's whatever I choose to make.  In a selfish kind of way...I figure I'm making them something...so they best like it no matter what ;) !

15 minute challenge...week 38

Happy Tuesday, it's time for me to check in with Kate and the 15 minute challenge!

Tuesday:  none

Wednesday:  none

Thursday: duffel

Friday: Rainbow Star quilting

Saturday: Rainbow Star quilting, Marcelle Medallion

Sunday:  Rainbow Star binding, Marcelle Medallion, OQ

Monday: OQ

So, 5 for 7 this week, woohoo!  I enjoyed a finish this past week, a new start, and I'm revisiting an old project (more on that later).

As part of the fostering creativity portion of the challenge, this week Kate discusses becoming an observer.  For me, if I wasn't an observer, I wouldn't challenge myself as much with new things.  The Marcelle Medallion quilt that I'm working on, I never would have tried if I hadn't seen other people's pictures and posts of their own quilts in progress.

That's all for now!  Girl is on Spring Break, and I took a few days off of work to spend some time with her.  Tomorrow we head to Charlotte to do some exploring!

15 minute challenge...week 37!

And I'm back in the game!  Had a VERY productive sewing week, so let's check in with Kate and the 15 minute Challenge:

Tuesday: Tote bag

Wednesday: Tote bag

Thursday: Sew South

Friday: Sew South

Saturday: Sew South

Sunday: duffle

Monday: duffle

7 for 7 baby!!!

To review the first part of 2013, I've been up and down.  Had a few weeks where I was sewing almost every day, and then had several weeks where I was doing almost no sewing.  It's ok though.  It's all part of life.

Right now I'm feeling really good and inspired and can't wait to get home each day and sew.  I have some more thoughts on this amazing quilting blog community that Kate mentions in today's challenge post, but will save those for my big ole Sew South post that I'm still trying to write.

Until later!

15 minute challenge...week 36

Happy Tuesday!  and we are already over half way through March...and heading very quickly to spring (had to start taking allergy meds again...ick).  Time to check in with Kate and the 15 minute challenge!

I actually did some sewing the past week, all of 2 days, but that wasn't for lack of trying or enthusiasm.  I am prepping for Sew South, so I have spent quite a bit of time with fabric and odds and ends, but only 2 days of sewing.  It's an improvement over previous weeks, so I'll take it!

Last night I quickly put together a strap cover for my camera using this tutorial at Moda Bake Shop (so quick and easy to put together! fabric = Ruby by Bonnie&Camille):

I like it!  I'm so excited for this retreat!  It's really sparking my creativity!  And it also happens to fit in with the 15 minute challenge March "theme" which is to talk about your sewing.  Which I manage to do quite a bit!  Several of my co-workers have learned quite a bit about the sewing process.  And I give them lots of credit, as they appear interested most of the time!  At the same time, other than on this blog, I really don't talk sewing with that many people that actually sew.  Some of that will change this weekend, (have I mentioned I'm over-the-moon excited about this??), and we'll see what I'm feeling about it next week!

being an adult

Sometimes being an adult bites the big one!

There is a lot going on behind the scenes right now at my house (nothing bad, just stuff).  Some of which requires those big ole fashioned grownup decisions.  Decisions I'm still working on, the kind I'm not sleeping too well about right now because I've got pros vs. cons lists rolling over and over in my noggin.  Time is about up for some of these decisions to be finalized, so we'll see how it goes.  I'll let you know more at a later date.

Some other stuff going on behind the scenes...I've been working out like crazy.  Made the decision at the beginning of the year that I needed some changes in my health (another grownup type thing).  I quit smoking last October, and started my new eating plan and working out in January of this year.  And so far, so good.  Pretty pleased with the results.  However, it does mean that my work outs are often taking up sewing time.  I just need to reschedule some things and try to figure out how to fit it all in!

I haven't sewn at all the past week.  I'm really missing it, so my plan right now is to get back on the 15 minute challenge wagon, and set the timer and make some room in the schedule for me to get my creativity on!  (ESPECIALLY since SEW SOUTH RETREAT is NEXT WEEK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I have a bunch to get done between now and then!)

15 minute challenge week 33 and 34...aka recovery

Well...it's been a little while since I last posted.  Not too terribly long, but long enough.

In the past two weeks I've accomplished 3 days of sewing...and all of that can be found in my posts from the 23-25 of February.  Making the swap back to day shift has taken me a lot longer this go round than in previous years.

Plus we were out of town over this past weekend.

Plus Girl has developed some insane cold that has kept her out of commission for most of this week.

So around my house...it's all called recovery time right now!  I haven't even done my usual blog crawl lately.  Part of fostering my own creativity is seeing how others employ theirs!

So now, it's time for me to recover some sewing time!

Posting with  Kate over at Life In Pieces to see how everyone has done lately!

15 minute challenge...week 32!

And once again I'm posting my 15 minute challenge results very late in the week, and I'll make it quick...I accomplished 15 minutes of sewing 3 times this week.  Saturday, Sunday and Monday.  I did finish a quilt though!  Shake n' Bake 2 was finished on Monday!  I really enjoyed quilting it with Sylvia, she's a dream quilter...however...worst binding job EVAH!  I think it's because I was used to Goldie and where my 3/8" seam lined up...and it was a little off when compared to Sylvia...so not my best work.  However, hubby loves the quilt...so all is good.  I'll post an official "finish" post later today...or tomorrow...LOL!

Other than that...I have made zero progress on moving my sewing area, and I'm ok with that.  The past few weeks of night shift have really run me ragged.  Thankfully, I am now, officially no longer on night shift (for a few months at least!).  And to reward myself, I'm taking an extra day for my weekend!  So I hope to really let the stitches fly!

Catch you later!!!

15 minute challenge...week 31!

Time for check in with the 15 minute challenge, and I'm posting a little late this week.  Oh well.  My current work schedule really caught up to me the past week and I'm running a little in the slow lane!

Tuesday: none

Wednesday: none

Thursday: none

Friday: J's shake n' bake (new one, no pics until it is delivered)

Saturday: Starburst

Sunday: Starburst, J's shake n' bake

Monday: J's shake n' bake

4 of 7 isn't too bad.  I've struggled the past few weeks trying to get those 15 minutes in a day, but thankfully 2 more weeks and I'll be off this current schedule (for a little while at least).

Now, let's talk about February's challenge...our sewing spaces.  I need to take pics of my space in the living room, took some quite a while back for a post, you can read about it and see them here.  I've rapidly overtaken close to 50% of the living room with just my sewing stuff.  Part of the reason why I've been aiming to move my sewing space to the upstairs office that used to be my stamping/scrapbooking space.  This would require me to really get rid of a ton of stuff (already gotten rid of quite a bit, but lot's more to go!) and I've been kind of lazy about not doing that.  So I'll work on it some this week/weekend, and we'll see how much progress has been made.

That's all I've got for now, catch you later!

Tuesday, February 5, 2013

15 minute challenge...week 30!

Wow...it's been one crazy week!  I did get some stitching done, brought home my machine (and a new one!), and just enjoyed playing with fabric and thread!  So here is how I ended up with the 15 minute challenge this past week:

Tuesday: none

Wednesday: none

Thursday: none

Friday: Scrappy Trip, Shake n' Bake 2

Saturday: Shake n' Bake 2, Starburst

Sunday: Starburst

Monday: Starburst, House block

I'll take 4 of 7! It's not what I would prefer...but I'll take it!  So that pretty much closes out January and we move into February, where Kate has us looking at a dedicated sewing space.  I'm very lucky to have a dedicated space to call my own.  However, this space has been in transition for a while.  I've been hoping to move into the upstairs office (used to be my scrap room (when I did papercrafts)), and while progress has been made in getting that room cleared out and reorganized for sewing purposes, it's not something I've spent a lot of time on the past few weeks.  So perhaps this month I need to refocus my efforts in that area.

Have a great rest of your Tuesday!
